Breast Cancer: My Personal Connection

Aloha Ola ‘Ohana,

This year, I want to make this personal. Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a rally cry to surround those battling cancer with support and aloha in the purest sense. Many of our mothers, sisters, daughters, and friends are touched by Breast Cancer and I feel compelled to do what I can to keep talking about it and doing what we can to support those who need our love and support.

Mahalo nui for being gentle with me as I dive deep inside me again, and find the courage to re-live the loss of my sister, Devon, from Breast Cancer in 2013.

In 2010 seven brave women joined my sister and photographer Catherine Money to create a beautiful photography expose’ representing the one in eight women in America who get diagnosed with breast cancer every year.  

Their vision was to help change the way we see breast cancer through the use of bold, often emotionally challenging images of real life women going through this very real life changing disease.

Their vision, to bring a fuller awareness, within the truths and beauty residing within every woman experiencing breast cancer. To shed light, which is a light that shines within every woman, found in her strength and courage to fight for life.

These women are inspiration, they are courage, and they manifest love in all its power to heal. Love heals.

I am deeply thankful for the opportunity for my sister to have participated in such a beautiful project and to carry on a piece of her with me through photographs and powerful imagery. She was a beautiful force to be reckoned with and is dearly and wholeheartedly missed.
