To inquire about a lomi stick, we must start with what is Lomilomi?
Lomilomi is Hawaiian healing massage. It literally means massage or to rub. The essence of this traditional massage is focused on the complete and total balance of self; connecting the body to the mind to achieve maximum healing potential. Lomi Lomi massage involves the combination of breathing and free-form instinctive techniques to open energy pathways, release tension, and remove blockages. During lomilomi massage, your entire body is massaged with long, rhythmic, and sweeping strokes similar to the motion of waves.
Traditionally the art of lomilomi in Hawai’i was passed on to chosen members within a family, and training took many years.
Hawaiian healing views health holistically and often includes prayer or pule, ho’oponopono (reconciliation of mind, body, heat and spirit), plant medicine and can include the resetting of the bones or internal cleansing.
Hawaiian healing tradition sometimes incorporates the lomi stick to help increase well-being by reducing stress and tension that cause inflammation.
Traditionally, each person was expected to harvest and carve their own lomi stick, beginning with choosing the right wood, carefully harvesting the desired part of the branch, removing the bark, drying, carving and sanding the stick. This way, each lomi stick represents it’s owner, imbued with the spirit and aloha of the person who made it.
Traditional lomi sticks were long, L-shaped branches designed to reach parts of the back that one cannot reach by themselves. Lomi sticks are all unique and may be straighter or knobbier, all with the intention to help reduce soreness, tension, and promote relaxation and wellbeing.
The Ola Pono version is a mini version of the traditional Hawaiian Lomi stick, made out of invasive Waiwi wood which is smooth, dense and comfortable on the skin.
A portion of the proceeds of the purchase of Ola Pono lomi sticks is donated to KUPU Hawai’I promoting environmental stewardship, sustainability and empowering today’s youth to create better, stronger, smarter communities of the future.
